A.

Acrophobia — The fear of heights

Aerial work platform — A mechanical device for temporary access to innaccessible areas, "Cherry Picker" or "Scissor Lift"

Ascender — Rope adjustment device which, when attached to an anchor line of appropriate type and diameter, locks under load in one direction and slides freely in the opposite direction

B.

Back up device — Rope adjustment device for a safety line of appropriate type and diameter, which accompanies the user during changes of position or allows adjustment of the length of the safety line, and which locks automatically to the safety line, or only allows gradual movement along it, when a sudden load is applied

Certificate of Conformity Documentation — provided by a supplier of equipment at the time of purchase, stating performance specifications of the equipment or indicating conformity to known standards or compliance with relevant legislation

CHAS — Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme

CPA — Construction Plant-hire Association

Collective Protection — Collective protection is equipment which can protect more than one person and, once properly installed or erected, does not require any action by them to take sure it will work.

COSHH — Control of substances hazardous to health

Cut Edge — Corrosion Corrosion which occurs to the sheet laps and sheet ends on a profiled metal sheeting

D.

Descender — Manually operated, friction inducing, rope adjustment device, which when attached to an anchor line of appropriate type and diameter, allows the user to achieve a controlled descent and to stop with hands off anywhere on the anchor line.

Delcote — Delcote is the only treatment suitable for reinstating an effective long-term coating on pre-finished organic coated sheets manufactured by Delvemade Ltd.

E.

Eyebolts — A bolt having a looped head designed to receive a hook or rope

Rope access eyebolts and abseil fixings require testing and examining every 6 months to comply with BS EN353 7985:2002

Window Cleaning Eyebolts require testing and examining every 12 months to comply with EN795:1997 and BS 7883:2005 regulations.

Fall Restraint — A System used to prevents a worker reaching a situation where a fall could occur

Fall Arrest — A system used to limit the effects of the fall

Fall Arrest Block Also known as a Self Retracting Lifeline (SRL) — a cable or webbing device, which self-retracts inside a housing unit to ensure that the cable or webbing remains taut at all times

G.

Gable — The vertical wall at the end of a pitched roof, an inverted 'V'

H.

HSE — Health and safety executive

Hipped roof — A roof sloping at the ends as well as the sides

IPAF — International Powered Access Federation

IRATA — Industrial Rope Access Trade Association

IOSH — Institution of Occupational Safety and Health

K.

Karabiner Connector — formed as a complete loop, with a spring loaded entry gate often safeguarded in the closed position by a screwed sleeve or automatic locking device.

L.

LOLER — Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations

Lanyard — A short rope or webbing used for fastening something or securing rig.

M.

MEWP — Mobile elevated work platform

Mansafe — A ManSafe® is a trade cable-based safety line that offers continuous protection for staff working at height made by Latchways Group

Mansard Roof — A roof set back from the building frontage, usually behind a parapet, and rising in two pitches to form an attic space.

N.

Nebosh — National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health

P.

PPE — Personal Protective Equipment

Personal Protection — Personal protection is equipment which protects only the user/wearer and requires action by the individual, such as properly wearing and adjusting it, for it to work.

PASMA — Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ and Manufacturers’ Association,

Parapet — The upper part of a wall, often used to hide roofs and decorated for architectural effect

Point Loading — Is a load which is localised to a specific location on a structure

PUWER — Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations

Putzmeister — Manufacturers of some of the most high-pressure cleaners in the world.

R.

RIDDOR — The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations.

RUTHMANN — Modern and innovative aerial platform and utility vehicle manufacturer

S.

SWL — Safe working load

SAEMA — Specialist Access Engineering and Maintenance Association

Scissor Lift — A type of platform which can usually only move vertically. The mechanism to achieve this is the use of linked, folding supports in a criss-cross 'X' pattern

Seamsil — Seamsil is a patented silicone system developed to solve the problem of Cut Edge Corrosion manufactured by Delvemade Ltd

Spider Lift — A tracked access platform for indoor or outdoor use

T.

Tingle — A small strip of lead, zinc or copper, nailed to the batten under a displaced slate to hold it in place.

U.

Unprotected Edge — An unprotected edge is any area which presents a fall hazard of more than 2 metres from the ground

V.

Valley — The internal angle formed where adjacent pitched roofs meet. Traditionally zinc or lead sheeting was used on site to create a water channel downwards, nowadays preshaped valley channels are available

Verge — The wall (or rafter) under the edge of a roof where it tops a gable end.

Working Load Limit — Maximum load that can be lifted by an item of equipment under conditions specified by the manufacturer

Weightanka — Weightanka® is a mobile, deadweight anchor device for use on roofs up to 5 degree pitch (Kee Safety Product)

Z.

Zero Targeting Establishment of a system of working which aims to achieve no accidents, no waste and no defects Zenith This is the point in the sky that is directly overhead; the highest point; apex or climax.
